CHEF OMAR TATE
Omar Tate is a chef, poet, visual artist, and cofounder of Honeysuckle Projects and Honeysuckle Restaurant in Philadelphia – a multifaceted food initiative rooted in the nuanced cultures and cuisines of the Black diaspora. A native of Germantown in Northwest Philadelphia with family ties to South Carolina, Omar spent over a decade working in acclaimed kitchens in Philly and New York City before launching Honeysuckle Pop-up to tell deeper, more honest stories of Blackness in America through food. His work explores the intersection of race, place, memory, and time, using food as a medium to challenge structural inequities while reimagining the past, present, and future of the Black experience.
Widely regarded as a visionary in the industry, Omar was named Esquire’s Chef of the Year and his Honeysuckle pop-up named Pop-Up of the Year in 2020. He was also listed on TIME100 Next in 2021 as one of the world’s top emerging innovators and awarded Food & Wine’s Best New Chef in 2026. His Afro-centric grocer and cafe, Honeysuckle Provisions, was recognized by Esquire and Bon Appétit as one of the best new restaurants and earned him a 2024 James Beard Award semifinalist nod for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. Additionally, under his leadership, Honeysuckle Restaurant was named a Bon Appétit Best New Restaurant 2026. Chef Omar Tate also held a prestigious residency as Chef in Residence at Stone Barns Center, where he worked with seasonal Hudson Valley ingredients while exploring Black foodways and an art gallery titled The Living Room exploring social themes related to the modern moment. His socially impactful Cultivating Community Dinner Series, spotlighting Black farmers and benefiting the Black Farmer Fund, garnered coverage in Vanity Fair and Vogue. Additionally, Chef Omar Tate was featured on Netflix’s Peabody- and NAACP Image Award-winning series High on the Hog, celebrated for its storytelling around Black culinary traditions.
In his free time, Omar enjoys painting, writing poetry, and spending time with his three sons, Bashir, Jupiter, and Apollo.
