Meet Netflix’s Next Gen Chef Winner Andrew Sargent
Since our inception, working with fantastic chefs who create unforgettable dishes has been central to our mission at Resident. We have the privilege of working with remarkable culinary talent from some of the world’s most acclaimed restaurants, from Apple TV’s Knife Edge - Chef Jing Ng to other critically acclaimed chefs like Ilke Schaaf and Joshua White.
One of the latest chefs to join the Resident roster is Andrew Sargent, whose career has taken him through several of New York City’s most prestigious kitchens. As of late, he has another major achievement to his name: winner of Netflix’s Next Gen Chef.
What is Netflix’s Next Gen Chef?
Netflix’s Next-Gen Chef is an eight-episode competition that brought together 21 ambitious chefs under the age of 30 at the Culinary Institute of America. Through a series of demanding (and highly watch-able!) culinary challenges, each contestant was tested on their technique, creativity, leadership, and ability to perform under pressure.
You may have heard of Andrew Sargent, as he was crowned the winner of the first season of Netflix’s Next Gen Chef.
If you watched Andrew throughout the competition, his success will likely have come as little surprise. Despite his young age, he’d already spent years developing his craft in some of the country’s most prestigious kitchens. His calm precision, technical expertise and distinctive culinary perspective ultimately helped him secure the title of Next Gen Chef winner.
From Fort Worth to New York City
Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, Andrew developed his love of food at home, where cooking brought the family together. Making meals with his family and watching TV shows like Top Chef as a teenager inspired an early fascination with life in the kitchen.
Andrew was still in college when he began working in restaurants, but it wasn’t long before he decided to quit and pursue his true passion, cooking, gaining invaluable experience in kitchens across Austin and the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
One of his most notable positions was his time at The French Room at The Adolphus Hotel in Dallas, then the only Forbes Five-Star restaurant in Texas. Although he entered the kitchen with limited professional experience, Andrew spent two years there and progressed from line cook to junior sous chef. During his time in Texas, he received mentorship from the executive sous chef, who taught him the rigor and discipline necessary for a professional kitchen.
Learning in New York’s most celebrated kitchens
Like many ambitious chefs, Andrew moved here to the City where he joined Café Boulud as a saucier. After his time there, he then moved to Daniel, initially working as a prep cook before rising to the position of sous chef.
Most recently, Andrew spent three years as a sous chef under Thomas Keller at Per Se. Alongside refining his technical abilities, he expanded his experience in menu development, running service and leading a kitchen at the highest level.
These roles helped Andrew develop the confidence to take classical culinary principles and transform them into food that feels personal and distinctly his own.
Andrew’s culinary style
Andrew’s heavily influenced by classical French technique, which he sees as a foundation from which other ideas and influences can develop. That technical precision is layered with a contemporary American sensibility and the Southern Americana of his Texas upbringing. His food often reinterprets familiar flavors and nostalgic ideas through the lens of modern fine dining.
The result is a style that feels refined without losing its personality: technically accomplished, imaginative and rooted in Andrew’s own experiences.
